She ran through the colorful, leaf-covered woods when she just ran short of breath. She stopped, gripping her knees, grasping for air, when she remembered why she was running in the first place. Scattering on the leafy floor, she crawled under a low tree. She tucked her legs under her chin and attempted to stop her heavy breathing. Suddenly, she heard him drawing near. There was no movement to be seen or heard within miles, including Jess' breath. As she saw his sharp, black boots walk past the tree she let out a small sigh of relief. That second of contentment ended quick when the boots turned back around. Jess gripped her legs tighter to her chest and stopped breathing completely. Jeff, the man, bent his knees right in front of the tree. He looked under all the trees surrounding him, except that one. He got up and continued walking at a quicker pace toward the deep end of the wood.
Jess got up and ran the opposite way as fast as she could. When she reached an area that looked familiar, she remembered why. It was where she first met Jeff. As the memories of it dashed through her head, she accidentally bumped into an unsuspecting stranger. Looking up and jumping back in fear, Jess looked at the man hoping and praying it wasn't the same man she met there last time.
"Hello, are you okay?" The man said, a bit of worry in his voice.
"I... I..." Jess could barely make out the proper words as her whole body shook and her eyes darted around.
"Calm down, come sit down and tell me what's wrong. You're okay, there are lots of people here to keep you safe."
Jess followed this man's instructions and sat down on a nearby bench. She clenched her fists at her lap and continued to look around with total awareness.
"Now, tell me what's wrong, miss." He asked fully concerned.
After calming down a bit, Jess answered him.
"I came here with my friend Rosy and the next thing I knew she was gone and I had been accompanied by a man to help me find her..."
He interrupted her, "Who was this man? And where's your friend? And what were you doing in this park in the first place...?"
She cleared her head, hoping he could help her, and decided to answer.
"His name was Jeff, that's what he told me at least after I introduced myself. I still have no idea where Rosy is, and we were just going for a walk. Rosy had recently broken up with her boyfriend so I took her out to console her... Ya know? Make her feel better..."
Still pretty confused, the man took Jess' hand and looked her in the eyes.
"I'm John. I'll take care of you and help you find your friend. I'm sure she's fine. Come on, we can drive around and call her name. We'll even stop by the police station."
A weird shiver shot through Jess' spine, something was weird about this. But she was in no position to oppose right now, she'd do anything to find Rosy.
"Okay." She replied.
"Why were you dashing from the woods, anyway?" He asked as they walked towards his car.
"It turned out Jeff was ... He wanted... I didn't trust him." Jess got in John's van and he closed the door. As she turned to sit down she faintly saw in the back corner of the van, Rosy, tied up and bloody. John got in the driver's seat, closed the door, and locked them all.
"Don't worry, you'll be safe now, Jess."
With all the thoughts running through her mind, all she could think of was that she had never told John her name.
